The Conversation Pit is a monumental nine-piece modular sofa designed by Studio Howard, built at Oregon Natural Fiber Mill (OnFM), with fabrication support by yours truly, Portland Garment Factory (PGF).

This piece is a physical representation of the creative ecosystem taking shape within our factories, where art, design, and manufacturing converge to spark bold collaborations in new territories.

The Conversation Pit marks a milestone in PGF’s evolution with the acquisition and revitalization of our sister company, OnFM. Once a legacy fiber mill and natural bedding manufacturer, OnFM has been reimagined to include a custom workroom specializing in upholstery and bespoke soft furnishings for designers and architects. This project celebrates the launch of those services, blending craftsmanship, sustainability, and artistry.

Together, PGF, OnFM, and Studio Howard form a trifecta of creativity and production, with their first collaborative creation, The Conversation Pit—a striking, artistically designed modular sofa built to seat up to 30 people and inspire connection at gatherings and events.

For years, PGF has dreamed of stepping deeper into the world of interior design. Through OnFM, we’re excited to bring upholstery and soft furniture into our repertoire, opening the door to fresh possibilities for designers, architects, and dreamers alike.
